This photo shows the second impact. Although the model impacted from about 4 feet (compared to the six foot drop of the first impact) this was the toughest on the airframe. How So? The nose gear is bent back and not available to absorb the impact energy like it did in the first impact. This is evident from how far the cowl is bent in this photo compared to the first impact photo (see the wider white line over the 03). It is at this point that we believe the small stress cracks developed near the mating line of the cowl area and the skin covered fuse forward of the canopy. All in all, the total damage cost about $30 in parts for the nose wheel retract and about 20 minutes to fix the small stress cracks. |
